With seventeen plates, and thirty coloured plates. Originally written in French by John Grand-Carteret. Grand-Carteret was a French journalist and historian, considered to be a pioneer in the field of iconology. Adolf Neumann was a German engraver, who published many portraits in 'Die Gartenlaube', a very successful and popular German newspaper. In the original half calf binding with cloth to the boards. externally, generally smart, with some rubbing and fading to the spine. A very little loss to the head of the spine. Crack to the tail of the front joint. Mark to the head of the rear board. Rear hinge starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, though some gatherings are loosening. Pages are bright with only the odd handling mark. Pages 87-90 are detached, and pages 95-96, 215-28 and 255-256 are working loose. Closed tear to the tail of page 17/18. Very Good . Ill.: Various.
